Putting books correctly on the shelf is one of the most important jobs of library staff. A book can be lost if it is only a few shelves away from its proper location, so if you are unsure where something goes, please ask!

Books on the top shelf of the cart behind the desk have been checked in and are ready for shelving. You should clear the cart at the beginning of each Aide hour.

Shelving Fiction

Barcodegn.png
  1. Grab a book and open to the barcode on the first page
  2. A fiction book will have a section name on the right of the library name. This one is a Graphic novel
  3. Take the book to that section and put it in the proper place:
    • If it is a graphic novel (like the one above), place it on the shelf alphabetically by title. This example would go alphabetically in the Rs.
    • If it is any other type (Fiction, Science Fiction, Mystery), then look to the third line on the barcode and place it on the shelf alphabetically by author's last name. It is always the first name on the barcode: here it is Knisley, so it would go alphabetically in the Ks if it weren't a graphic novel.

Shelving Nonfiction

Nonfiction books are easier to spot without opening them because they have information on their spine label. They go on the shelf in numeric order.
